Chrysler minivans have always been a hybrid of sorts — functional for the family, economical, practical and fun to drive. So it makes sense that now the All-New 2017 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid, set to arrive this fall, is a true hybrid, engineered and designed to do it all. It’s the first of its kind, a vehicle that employs cutting-edge modern technology to deliver a clean, efficient driving experience for the next generation of minivan owners.

How does the Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid do it? Let’s take a look under the hood — and under the floor.

Innovative Technology

The pivotal technology behind the All-New 2017 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid is its innovative dual-motor electrically variable transmission (EVT). Designed and patented by FCA US, the device features two electric motors — both of which are capable of driving the vehicle’s wheels. Typical hybrid-vehicle setups dedicate one motor to serve as a generator and a second motor — usually much larger — to deliver torque to the wheels. The Pacifica Hybrid uses a one-way clutch that allows the motor typically used only as a generator to deliver torque to the wheels, depending on driving conditions. The result is increased efficiency, refinement and improved packaging.

The Engine

The 2017 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid pairs its dual-motor EVT with a specially modified version of the upgraded 3.6-liter Pentastar® V6 gasoline engine. The electric motors and gasoline engine work in tandem, seamlessly transitioning between full hybrid and gas modes to provide the ideal combination of efficiency and power based on driving conditions.

With that fuel-saving technology under the hood, the Pacifica Hybrid is still able to achieve an impressive estimated 260 (total system) horsepower. Now wait until you read about the driving range…

Driving Range and MPGe

The 2017 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid, the first electrified vehicle in the minivan segment*, is expected to achieve 80 miles per gallon equivalent (MPGe) in the city (based on U.S. Environmental Protection Agency standards).

Plus, with the Pacifica Hybrid’s high-capacity battery and plug-in capability, it can go a full 30 miles without using a drop of gas when fully charged. That’s 30 miles of all-electric, zero-emissions, gas-free operation, making the Pacifica Hybrid the perfect option for getting around town.

Recharging the Batteries

Recharging the 2017 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid is convenient and seamless, alleviating any hassle. During driving, deceleration triggers the electric motor to turn into a generator, which creates electricity to send back to the battery pack. That means you’re often charging during normal driving.

While the Pacifica Hybrid will function as a conventional hybrid vehicle should you choose to never plug it in, in order to take full advantage of the range-extending capability of the battery, the vehicle can be plugged into a standard 120V outlet — or you can take advantage of the faster charging offered by a 240-volt charge system. The exterior charge port is located on the driver’s-side fender for quick and easy plug in after exiting the vehicle. On the inside, a charging indicator light is located on the instrument panel so you can easily monitor the battery charge status and plan your next trip accordingly.

The battery pack — neatly packaged under the second-row floor in the new unique battery case — may be fully recharged in as little as two hours using a 240-volt plug-in system. The efficient storage under the floor allows the 2017 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid to preserve the third-row Stow ’n Go® seating and storage, thus maintaining room for all your cargo. Second-row seats can be fully removed as well, allowing a flat load floor behind the first-row seats for maximum cargo space.

The high-capacity battery allows all-electric operation when fully charged. When the battery’s energy is depleted to a certain threshold, the 2017 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid becomes a part-time electric vehicle, like a conventional hybrid. Power to the wheels is supplied by the electric drive system and/or the specially adapted new version of the award-winning Pentastar 3.6-liter V6 engine. The vehicle seamlessly transitions between the two modes depending on operating conditions.
